Why Bolder Energy is Different
Bolder Energy's greatest strength is it's people. Engaging in work with Bolder Energy means developing a positive working relationship with one or more of our team's members who will become your professional resource for all things energy, engineering, and facility management related. Bolder Energy is a worker-owned cooperative business. The majority of our team are owners and those newest to our team have a path to ownership. Regardless of ownership status, every team member enjoys the freedom and support to pursue and provide the work they enjoy the most.

Co-owner Senior Commissioning Agent Mike has over 20 years of experience providing LEED commissioning, LEED M&V, engineering consulting, project management, and energy audit services. Mr. Renner has worked with many clients commissioning their facilities, conducting resource efficiency programs, programming control systems, and managing the design and installation of building systems. Mike specializes in building commissioning and has been the lead CxA on over 30 new construction and remodel projects including over 20 school facilities and 11 LEED projects. He has experience commissioning ground source (geo-exchange) heat pump systems, condensing boilers, chillers and cooling towers, direct/indirect evaporative systems, and has worked with all major building automation systems including Siemens, Andover, ALC, JCI, Carrier, Alerton, Trane, Honeywell, and Reliable controls. He also has strength in reviewing design specifications, commissioning full building systems including security and technology systems. He specializes in working closely with facility departments to develop strategies for improving operations and implementing conservation measures while training their personnel on how to maintain the achieved savings. David Morroni, LEED Green Associate
Building Performance Project Engineer David is an impact-oriented building energy engineer with a passion for reducing the environmental impact of the built environment. He is interested in building solutions that take advantage of relationships between buildings and their climates, energy suppliers, and districts to minimize their GHG emissions. David has specialized experience developing automated processes to solve unique problems in the building energy efficiency industry. He has created client-specific solutions using Python data analysis and machine learning together with building and district energy modeling. His past projects have predicted building energy savings in various scenarios, informing decarbonization decisions for policymakers, cleantech entrepreneurs, and utility companies. David has also managed or contributed to the completion of industry standard energy engineering projects, including building energy models, energy audits, retro-commissioning studies, and retrofit HVAC system design. Ursula Volz, EIT
Junior Energy Engineer Ursula is the newest member of our team. She has a background in Mechanical Engineering from Harvard University. She specializes in building energy management & planning. Her experience includes building energy modeling, energy auditing, retro-commissioning studies, building commissioning, and state of Colorado benchmarking. |
Kevin Mueller, P.E., LEED AP
Co-owner Senior Commissioning Agent Kevin possesses a unique line of experience rarely found among commissioning agents. He has over 20+ years of experience in the commissioning, design (mechanical and control systems), and refrigeration industry. He is an expert in diagnosing operational and performance problems that occur in buildings and in the HVAC and refrigeration systems that serve them. As a commissioning (Cx) agent, Kevin plans and implements commissioning activities, including design review, construction observation and contractor coordination, functional performance tests, and short-term monitoring. He has performed these Cx activities on HVAC, refrigeration, commercial kitchen equipment, lighting, and control systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. His project experience as a design build engineer ranges from ISO Class 4 clean rooms to industrial refrigeration system to campus heating and cooling systems. He has worked with the entire range of control systems from standalone programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to fully integrated campus wide networks and has helped several facilities upgrade their building automation systems. He is also experienced in developing and implementing short-term monitoring plans and using advanced data acquisition equipment and diagnostic software. He started accumulating knowledge of the refrigeration trade at age 16 working with his older brothers installing refrigeration and HVAC systems. He worked his way through college working at a wholesale parts counter selling HVAC and refrigeration parts, supplies and equipment and later as a sole proprietor designing, servicing and installing HVAC and refrigeration equipment and systems. He has experience working in food processing plants, grocery stores, ripening rooms, frozen food storage and distribution facilities. Steve Morgan, P.E., CEM, GBE
Co-owner Senior Energy Engineer Steve has been providing energy efficiency consulting services to commercial, institutional, medical, industrial, food service, and government clients since 2009. His specialties include investment grade energy auditing, implementation-focused retro-commissioning, controls optimization, peak electric demand management and measurement and verification (M&V). Steve excels at working directly with facility staff, building operators, and contractors alike to see projects through to implementation. His experience is exemplified by his work at dozens of facilities with a wide range of sizes and system complexities in small, medium, and large commercial, industrial, agricultural, healthcare, hospitality, government, and municipal facilities. Steve’s professional career started in 2009 with full-time employment at EMC Engineers (acquired by Eaton Corporation in 2010) after a successful summer internship in 2008 and a subsequent semester of part-time employment while finishing is undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering at CU-Boulder. During his time at EMC/Eaton, Steve worked on the analysis side of Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs), spent significant time in the field working on retro-commissioning and commissioning projects, traveled as far as Japan for Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) energy audits, and played a critical role in the development of Xcel Energy’s Re-Commissioning Calculation and Analysis Tool, currently in use by hundreds of vendors throughout Xcel Energy’s territories.
